I want to invite you to discover my most recent article on GenAI and productivity on Forbes Tech Council.

Summary
  • The article discusses the economics of GenAI infrastructure, which involves high costs but also high potential returns.
  • GenAI is expected to revolutionize the world and create new demand for AI applications across various industries.
  • The article compares GenAI to electricity, which was initially built for lighting but later enabled many modern inventions.
  • The article uses a professional tone to analyze the supply and demand imbalance of GenAI investments and the future productivity gains they could generate.

The article “GenAI Infrastructure Spend Is Justified By Future Productivity Gains” is based on previous ideas of Sabrina Wu and Vivek Ramaswami from Madrona Ventures and Guido Appenzeller from A16Z.

The basic idea is to estimate today’s investments in Generative AI infrastructure ($200B) and then consider the opportunity of 10%-40% productivity gains for the Fortune 500 (aggregate revenues of $40T). This is simplistic back of the napkin “reasonableness” consideration, but it helps us situate the macro conditions.

I then follow Sabrina and Vivek in looking at historical comparables (electricity infrastructure). Also, I present Guido’s consideration that future uses are different from what we can expect today. That way I can help the reader gain the broader context for our society and civilization.
